Medical Insurance: Nixon-Smiley CISD in cooperation with Blue Cross Blue Shield (Active Care BCBS) and Texas Schools Health Benefits Program ( TSHB program) offer health insurance options designed to meet the needs of N-S CISD employees and their families (NSCISD group health coverage complies with Tex. Educ. Code 22.004(d)) .
Blue Cross Blue Shield: Use the Blue Cross Blue Shield Active Care web site to view plan information, print your own temporary medical insurance or Rx card. Click on the link to find a doctor near you or to access more benefits information. When entering the Blue Cross Blue Shield web site, either log in using your existing member information or register as a first time user.
Need a replacement BCBS card? Call a Personal Health Guide at 1-866-355-5999 to get your ID card information. You can then register for Blue Access for Members . With your member information, you can get an ID card by:
- Download the BCBSTX App from Apple App Store or Google Play for a digital ID card
- Text BCBSTX to 33633 and following the prompts
- Login to BAM to print a temporary ID card–once in BAM, left-click on the picture of the ID card to print or download.

Nixon-Smiley CISD currently contributes $397.00 monthly to reduce the cost of any plan selected by a full-time employee enrolled in Active Care insurance.
Life insurance: The school district provides a $20,000 life insurance policy (at no cost) for each employee. You may purchase additional coverage amounts.
Flex Card (FSA): Is a medical expense debit card with an available balance of $500 per plan year. The card is offered (at no cost to employees) as an alternative for those who do not elect TRS Active Care medical insurance or the TSHB program. Uses for the card must be for medical, dental, co-payments, prescription drugs and some approved over the counter medication(s). FSA plans are governed by IRS rules and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) via our co-op relationship with National Benefit Services (NBS820871) click here for a link to more information on the employee benefits portal.
457 Savings Plan: The school district contributes to a 401(a) retirement plan designed to supplement a retirement plan or just get employees started on saving for the future! District contributions on behalf of the employee are 100% vested after five years of continuous employment. N-S CISD matches full-time employee 457 contributions up to 3% with a maximum of $1,500 annually (part-time employees are matched at 1/2 the rate/amount). Car/Phone/Travel Expenses: When available, the district maintains several vehicles for school business travel. Approved school related expenses will be reimbursed on a monthly basis per district policy.
