Dear Parents and Community,

Many of you have asked how you can help. One way is to relay our messages to your neighbors who do not have internet, Facebook, or cell phone access. We are doing our best to send urgent messages in all the ways we can, but I worry we are still missing some of our most needy.

Here are the most recent updates and Q&As from NSCISD:

Meal Delivery: A lot of good news because the Texas Department of Agriculture has softened some rules.

  • Beginning Monday, March 23rd, the District will be providing and delivering a bundled breakfast and lunch to all children under the age of 18, Monday - Friday. We had previously been serving only one meal at a time.
  • We will also be distributing those meals using busses and school vehicles at stops along our normal bus routes. Drivers will leave the cafeteria at 10:00 am. Please plan to pick up your children's meals at their regular designated bus stop.
  • At bus stops, parents may now pick up the meals by simply providing children's names and signing a consent form. Children do not need to be present. You can fill out the consent for at:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfPxLHnUZcTwtRmT-qfmob9Aic43nH9IGRlwy_6__RS38Jz5A/viewform
We will also have paper copies of the consent form available to sign as we deliver meals.
  • If your child is a walker/car rider or not otherwise in our bus rider system and you would like to be able to pick up meals at the nearest bus stop to your home, please call or text your address to (512) 677-9425. We will respond with the location of the nearest bus stop and ask how many children we will be serving. You can also find bus stops at www.nixonsmiley.net or the Nixon-Smiley~Home of the Mustangs Facebook page.
  • Grab and go breakfast and lunch is still available at the Nixon Cafeteria from 7:30-9:00 a.m. and 11:30 am - 1:00 pm. If you choose that option, students must be present.
  • Outside of the NSCISD area --Parents can now visit https://txschools.gov/ to find locations for free meals (breakfast or lunch) for their children. Select “Meal Pick-Up Locations” for a school near you.

Remote Learning:

Beginning on March 24th at 10 a.m., students will have “remote learning boards”, which are menus of activities students can work through independently or with assistance from their families. These are designed to reinforce learning and build on skills. For high school students, boards will be designed to help students finish the credits they were working on when the school closed. Seniors will be able to complete credits towards graduation.

The remote learning boards will be posted on the NSCISD website under the COVID-19 link, on our website: www.nixonsmiley.net. Printed packets for all grade levels will also be available for pick up during “grab & go” breakfast and lunch and on the meal buses as they make meal deliveries. Students in grades 5-12 will have access to the remote learning boards through their district-issued email. If none of these options will work for you, please use the email addresses noted below to discuss other options.

As an added measure of support, teachers will be communicating with students and families regularly to provide feedback and assist with student learning. Please add your children’s teachers’ phone numbers to your contact list so that you will know it is not a spam call. Also, if the District does not have your most current phone number, please email the addresses below.

More details will be posted Tuesday on the website (www.nixonsmiley.net => COVID-19 link), such as how to submit work and evidence of learning.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact your child’s campus principal via their school email anytime or personal cell phones (8 am- 4 pm). All NSCISD campuses and offices will be closed so please do not call the school phones and leave a message.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to working together in an effort to best support our students and families. We miss all of our students and look forward to seeing them again.

Continued Q & A:

  • First, let me address the rumors flying around. We do NOT have a diagnosed case of COVID-19 among our staff. And for everyone concerned about being exposed recently -- Rachel Warns of Texas Department of State Health Services wrote to me, "There are likely more cases in the community than we know about, which is why it is so important to stay home if we are sick and avoid contact with others." So yes, you may have been - but it could have been anywhere, anytime. I assure you, no one is intentionally infecting others or purposefully concealing information that is putting public health at risk. Can you help us squash the rumors and accusations? Nobody needs that right now. IF there is a case in the NSCISD area, it will be up to the treating hospital or physician to report it to the state and local authorities will be informed.
  • Items at school (meds, personal supplies, etc) - If your child(ren) have items at school that must be picked up within the next few days, please email me at cathy.lauer@nixonsmiley.net. I will push the email to the appropriate person to contact you and make arrangements.  If you can wait for non-essentials, we would appreciate it!

Finally, please reach out to us if you have any needs at all. Our Communities in Schools program will contact you and we will do our best to help. We know this is a stressful time and want to provide any support we can.
