Band

The Nixon-Smiley Band program is a proud part of Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District. The band program caters to the musical and creative minds of students from grades 6-12. Our mission is to inspire and empower students to grow, lead, and serve through meaningful musical opportunities and experiences.

Ensembles

Marching Band

This ensemble consists of Nixon-Smiley HS students, grades 9-12. The Mustang Marching Band attends all football games, pep rallies, marching contests, and other public events to support the community of Nixon-Smiley. As well as during class time, the marching band has regular rehearsals after school during the football/marching season to put together its yearly production.

High School Band

This ensemble consists of Nixon-Smiley HS students, grades 9-12. The High School Band prepares high-level music in a concert band setting, where they refine their technique, musicianship, and ensemble skills. This ensemble performs multiple concerts throughout the year and participates in UIL Concert & Sight-Reading.

Middle School Band

This ensemble consists of Nixon-Smiley MS students, grades 7-8. The Middle School Band prepares music in a concert band setting, where they continue to learn technique, musicianship, and ensemble skills for the next level. This ensemble performs multiple concerts throughout the year and participates in UIL Concert & Sight-Reading.

Beginner Band

This ensemble consists of Nixon-Smiley MS students, primarily in grade 6. This is where the magic begins. Students in these classes are assigned to and learn their first concert band instrument. Students spend the year learning how to read music and learning the techniques of their chosen instrument.

Directors

Kevin Luedecke, Head Band Director

Mr. Luedecke has been the Head Director of the Nixon-Smiley Bands since 2024. Previously, he was the Assistant Director from 2014 to 2024. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Texas Lutheran University in 2012.

A trombone player at heart, Mr. Luedecke has performed with the Heart of Texas Concert Band, San Antonio Community Wind Ensemble, and Crossmen Winds. In his spare time, Mr. Luedecke enjoys learning new instruments, gaming, and running his business, repairing and restoring vintage electronics. 

Myles Thornton, Assistant Band Director

Mr. Thornton is a native of San Antonio, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he earned his Bachelor of Music Education. Mr. Thornton brings with him a variety of ensemble experiences from his time at UTSA. He has also performed as a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps and served as a band leader at SeaWorld.

Mr. Thornton is in his first year at Nixon-Smiley CISD, and his first year as a band director. In his spare time, Mr. Thornton enjoys spending time with friends, going to the gym, and playing his trumpet.
