Health & Wellness

Research shows that healthy children do better in school - from attendance and behavior to academics and overall performance. Nixon-Smiley CISD believes that the ability to learn at school is directly related to the status of a student’s health. We are dedicated to supporting current health initiatives. Together, we can help our students establish healthy behaviors and practice good health habits every day. For additional information concerning school health and safety, please visit the Texas Department of State Health Services.

As stated in our Student Handbook on pages 51 and 52:

SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL

What is a School Health Advisory council (SHAC)?

A SHAC is a group of individuals representing segments of the community, appointed by the school district to serve at the district level, to provide advice to the district on coordinated school health programming and its impact on student health and learning.

SHACs provide an efficient, effective structure for creating and implementing age-appropriate, sequential health education programs, and early intervention and prevention strategies that can easily be supported by local families and community stakeholders.

Benefits of Having a SHAC

  • Addressing the health needs of students through the work of the SHAC, helps meet district performance goals and alleviates financial constraints.

  • SHACs play an important role in communicating the connection between health and learning to school administrators, parents and community stakeholders.

  • SHACs can help parents and community stakeholders reinforce the health knowledge and skills children need to be healthy for a lifetime.

SHAC Laws

Every independent school system is required by law to have a School District Health Advisory Council; of which the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the school district. Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004 of the Texas Education Code athttp://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/ED/htm/ED.28.htm#28.004p details the specifics of this mandate.

Recommended Childhood and Adolescent Immunization Schedule, United States, 2011

Why immunize your child?

Vaccines work to protect infants, children, and adults from illnesses and death caused by infectious diseases. While the U.S. currently has record, or near record, low cases of vaccine-preventable diseases, the viruses and bacteria that cause them still exist. Even diseases that have been eliminated in this country, such as polio, are only a plane ride away. Polio, and other infectious diseases, can be passed on to people who are not protected by vaccines. *Vaccine-preventable diseases have a costly impact, resulting in doctor's visits, hospitalizations, and premature deaths. Sick children can also cause parents to lose time from work.*
