Dear Parents and Community,
I am writing to ask your continued patience as we work our way through this COVID-19 pandemic. While my initial hope had been to reopen schools the week of March 23rd, I do not know if that will be possible. I know this is very disruptive to families, but our community’s health and wellness are our priority right now. NSCISD administration will continue to make the best decisions we can with most accurate information available.
For planning purposes, our current projected start date for students is projected to be March 24th. Teachers and staff will be asked to return one day early (March 23rd). On that work day, we will be reorganizing classrooms and schedules to ensure students have space available for social distancing while still engaging in school activities. For example, one measure will be to move student desks farther apart. We are also talking about staggering transportation routes to ensure fewer children on the bus. More information on that will be forthcoming if we are on track to reopen.
We are also planning for the possibility of a longer pause in our normal operations. If that occurs, it is our intent to provide some measure of instruction to our students in whatever way possible. Learning does not have to happen within the confines of our campuses. More on that if a longer closure becomes our reality.
We learned yesterday that Governor Abbott is waiving state testing requirements this year. For grade level and graduation purposes, we will be making local decisions rather than using the previously-required STAAR and EOC tests. We also know there have been some significant adjustments to extra-curricular activities governed by UIL. So the end of the school year is going to look much different than we had originally planned. As we adjust, we will strive to keep you informed.
On a different note, I am aware that some believe the precautions being taken around the world are excessive. I hope they are right but we have no way of knowing that definitively right now. Therefore, we continue our safety measures in an abundance of caution.

Les escribo para pedirles su paciencia continua mientras avanzamos en esta pandemia de COVID-19. Si bien mi esperanza inicial había sido reabrir las escuelas la semana del 23 de marzo, no sé si eso será posible. Sé que esto es muy perjudicial para las familias, pero la salud y el bienestar de nuestra comunidad son nuestra prioridad en este momento. La administración de NSCISD continuará tomando las mejores decisiones que podamos con la información más precisa disponible.
Para fines de planificación, proyectamos que nuestra fecha de inicio para los estudiantes será el 24 de marzo. Se les pedirá a los maestros y al personal que regresen un día antes (23 de marzo). En ese día de trabajo, estaremos reorganizando las aulas y los horarios para asegurar que los estudiantes tengan espacio disponible para el distanciamiento social mientras aún participan en actividades escolares.
